To Pre-Wash or Not Pre-Wash

In sewing groups, the topic of pre-washing fabric often sparks debates, particularly when creating items for selling purposes. The opinions vary widely from experienced sewers who have never pre-washed to those who pre-wash every piece of fabric. Some only pre-wash clothing and similar items that will require washing after being made.

Me, I prewash my fabric and I do this for a few reasons.

  • After leaving the factory, the fabric is transported to distribution centres before heading to its final destination for sale. It is typically displayed on shelves either as a bolt or an assorted bundle tied with a ribbon, which we crafty ones like to call “free gift with purchase”. However, as it travels along the supply chain, and is put on display for sale, it undergoes multiple handling and may accumulate dirt and dust.
  • There is a possibility that the fabric may still contain chemicals from the manufacturing process. I purchased some fabric a few months ago and upon removing it from its mailing bag, I experienced severe itching and wheezing.
  • It’s important to be aware that certain fabrics, particularly cotton, have the tendency to shrink. Even if you advise your buyer to spot clean only, they may still opt to wash it in the machine, leading to potential distortion of the item.
  • Colours can still run even when spot cleaning. I always make sure to use a colour/dye catcher when pre-washing to prevent any possible colour bleeding.
  • One way to assess the quality of fabric is its appearance after it’s been washed. If it doesn’t retain its original look, it may not hold up well with regular use.

Here’s some fabric I washed on cold cycle using a gentle fragrance-free detergent.

picture shows some black fabric that has colourful skulls this added paisley swirls and flowers.

The black fabric appears heavily speckled and the colours have faded. Unfortunately, I do not have a before to show the difference. Despite its condition, I won’t discard it. Instead, I plan on using it for pattern testing or as stuffing material.

Determining whether to prewash your fabrics is a personal decision that only you can make..
I make it clear in my Etsy listing that I prewash the fabric and explain the reasoning behind it in the FAQ section.
