So I’ve been wanting to do some YouTube videos for a long time, especially as I do my blog posts series on the tools and equipment I use for my home business, which I have planned. But me and cameras are not a match made in heaven.
My phone is pretty old, so not ideal for the task. However, many years ago I bought a refurbished camcorder, and with the right lighting, the quality isn’t bad.
I can also record on my DSLR camera, but only for short periods; it will be useful at times to use both when I want to record something from different angles
I’ve purchased a fairly inexpensive ring light from Amazon, it had 35% off so was under £20. It is only 10″ across but should suit me for now; I can look to upgrading if my videos take off.
I’m recording the videos and then adding a voice-over, as I’m not confident to do it direct to camera – and this is probably what I am finding the hardest to do as I can get very tongue-tied.
I should have worked on the script first, and thought about everything I wanted to say, before recording the video, as the video as it currently stands, is too short. But I can add in some stills and record some extra video to use at the start and end.
I’m using the free version of DaVinci Resolve for both my video editing and voice-over work, so am also learning that as I go along.
Grammarly is again my friend here as I can be the waffle queen and spout off about something but never get to the point. So I am putting into Grammarly what I want to say, and then getting it to rephrase and sometimes shorten my text.
I’m also not very good at reading from a script, so I’m just recording short sections at a time and then piecing it together, as well as matching it up with the video.
It is a little crazy that a video, that is probably going to be less than 5 minutes, is taking me such a long time to record, but it is my first one, so I’m sure the more I do the easier it will get.
